According to Nikkei Marketing Journal, department stores’ sales of major cities in March 2020 declined by ▲36 % over last year. This is because sharp decrease of overseas visitors to Japan and nationwide voluntary ban of outgo due to the spread of COVID-19.
Japanese government imposed a state of emergency on 7th April. After that, department stores shortened opening hours and shuttered until 25th May (lift of the state of emergency) . It means that April and May sales should be much worse than that of March.
